Product reviews

Product reviews is a built-in customer feedback tool in Genstore. No installation is required—you can access it directly from the admin menu to manage all review-related settings. This feature helps you collect, display, and manage authentic product reviews, building trust and boosting conversions and repeat purchases.

Use cases

  • Promoting bestsellers: Build a "trust wall" with positive reviews and user-submitted photos to drive purchases.
  • User-generated content: Let customers participate by leaving comments and engaging with others.
  • Localized trust-building: Show reviews in local languages to enhance trust with international shoppers.

Review settings

  1. Go to Products -> Reviews in the Genstore admin.
  2. Click Settings to configure the following:

Review display settings

  • Auto-publish reviews
    • Off (default): All reviews require manual approval by the merchant.
    • On: New reviews are published automatically without moderation. Applies only to future reviews.
  • Customer name display
    • Full name: Display the full customer name
    • Privacy mode: Display partial names
  • Permissions to comment or reply
    • No restrictions: Anyone can leave or reply to reviews.
    • Login required: Only registered users can participate.
    • Login and purchase required: Only logged-in customers who purchased the product can leave reviews or replies.

Import reviews

You can import reviews using one of the following methods:

  1. Go to Products -> Reviews in the Genstore admin.
  2. Click Import, then choose one of these options:
    • Import from supported apps (e.g., Shopify, Loox, Judge.me)
      • Select the platform, download the provided CSV template, complete it, and upload.
    • Import from supported platforms (currently Amazon)
      • Use the browser extension Amazon Reviews Exporter to integrate and import reviews from Amazon.
    • Upload a CSV file
      • Download the template, fill in your review data, and upload the file.
  3. After uploading, go to your personal account, click ... -> Task center to view import status:
    • Success: Reviews are added to the system.
    • Failure: Download the error report, fix the issues, and reupload.

Enable review display (theme setup)

After enabling the review feature in the admin, you also need to activate the review module in the theme editor.
This ensures that customers can leave reviews on the storefront, view feedback from other buyers, and see star ratings on product detail pages.

  1. Go to Online Store -> Themes, and click the Customize button next to your active theme.
  2. In the top page selector, choose Products -> Default product.
  3. In the left-side editing panel, go to Segment template.
  4. Click Add section, switch to the Apps tab, and choose Product reviews.
  5. Configure display settings, including total number of reviews, star ratings, and review summary style.
  6. Save the changes. Reviews will now appear on your product detail pages.

Customer reviews

Once review display is enabled, customers can submit reviews directly on the storefront, including:

  1. Star rating — Rate products on a scale of 1–5 stars.
  2. Text review — Share their purchase or usage experience.
  3. Media upload — Upload images or videos to show real product usage.

Product star ratings (theme editor)

The star rating widget can be added to product detail pages or product cards to visually display overall customer ratings.
It typically shows 1–5 stars, giving buyers a quick view of product reputation and quality.

Steps:

  1. Go to Online Store -> Themes, then click Customize next to the current theme.
  2. In the top page selector, choose Products -> Default product.
  3. In the left-side editing panel, go to Segment template.
  4. click Add section. In the popup, switch to the Apps tab and select Star ratings.
  5. Configure the display style, such as star icon design and icon color.
  6. Save, and the star rating widget will appear on the product detail page.

Q1. Do I need to install the product review app?

A: No. The Reviews feature is built-in and accessible from the admin menu.

Q2. Do I need to manually add the review module in the theme?

A: Yes. You need to manually add the Product reviews section to your product page template for reviews to appear on the storefront.

Q3. Do I need to add the review section for each product?

A: No. If all products use the same template, one setup is enough. If you want different review styles for different templates, you’ll need to configure each template separately.
